Male Breast Reduction
This is the benign enlargement of male breasts due to abnormal overproduction of the mammary gland, adipose tissue, or the combination of the two states. This situation causes discomfort and embarrassment, mostly for teenagers and young men.
After a thorough examination of the patient that includes a full clinical and laboratory testing, we proceed to the surgical treatment. The latter is done by removing the excess tissue with a periareolar incision or by liposuction. In some cases we can combine the two techniques and sometimes the area around the nipple is cut smaller.
How long does the operation take? How dangerous is it?
Surgery is performed under general anesthesia and lasts 1-2 hours. At the end of the operation drains are placed in each breast to prevent hematoma which is the most frequent complication. Other, less common complications are breast asymmetry and nipple discoloration.
Which is the postoperative development? When can I exercise?
The patient remains in the clinic overnight and exits the clinic the following day wearing a special elastic brassiere which is used for 4-6 weeks. Bruising and swelling is common. Mild pain is treated with anti-inflammatory medicine.
